I know! It seemed to fluctuate between 5 - 8.4v, so lucky I nipped that in the bud. I know it's basic old-computer practice to check the voltages so I've learnt to do that simple thing more (and first) in the future.

In the end RAM IC8 was actually fine and it was its neighbour IC16 that was spoiling things - my chip tester didn't even recognise it as a 64Kx8 chip. All fine now. I quite enjoyed that repair.
