My Q68 configuration

Postby Zerover » Tue Feb 04, 2020 8:29 am

This is how I have implemented my Q68 system.

I have taken a keyboard, a mouse and an 1024x768 VGA display from an obsolete Dell computer.

I have bought some pieces of hardware to configure it to my liking:

  • Black Plastic 3Pin Male IEC320 C6 Power Inlet Socket AC250V 2.5A
  • RLEIL RL3-4 Red Lamp 4Pin ON-OFF DPST Mini Rocker Switch 6...
  • 4 x Female Connector + Insulation Housing Crimp Terminal 4.8mm
  • 10W 5V 2A AC/DC Regulated switching power supply for LED Strip Light / Display
  • KF2510-3P 2.54mm 3*Terminal + Housing Connector
  • 6-Pin Square 7mmx7mm Momentary DPDT Mini Push Button SwitchSC
  • DIY USB Type A Female Breakout Board Module 5V Power 2.54mm Header
  • PS2 Keyboard for Arduino PS/2 Adapter Ad Module
  • TRRS Jack Breakout Board Headset Stereo Socket Extension Module
  • Phillips Pan Head Sheet Metal Self Tapping Screws Flat Tail Black Zinc Plated
  • Black Self Adhesive Rubber Feet Semicircle Bumpers Door Buffer Pad
  • 6W 2.0 USB Mini Portable Stereo Speaker Laptop Desktop Computer PC Smartphone

I now am disigning a case with OpenSCAD to put it all together:

By the way, I have included an inscription with the names of the authors. Please correct me if it is wrong.

I just need to put the details to fix the components inside.

The USB connectors are for power out only, for the speaker and the like. I've thinking to attach an USB host module, perhaps in the future.

Looks great!
Are rectangular LEDs still available?

Hi,

Looks a nice design, can insert 2 holes for the QL LAN Connectors?

Rectangular LEDs are available as standard parts from any Electronics Supplier.

Thanks for the positive comments, this design is only a copy of original style.

The LEDs in the picture are the built-in round ones that came with the Q68.

I have tried a couple of places to put the net connectors:

q68_case_net_2.png

Also I could design the case a bit bigger to make another place for them. Although I don't really know what the circuit to add is like.

Where do you think is a good place?

Sorry to crash this, but I'd also be interested to see more about the circuitry for the Q68 QLNET sockets. The schematic I have seen (on Dilwyn's page on also on the German forum from Peter) is quite low res and I can't work it out. Even if it were high res I probably wouldn't be able to! I know that all that is required is on the connector block, pins 1-4 if I remember rightly, but where exactly do the diodes/resistor go?

Collector of original and some newer QL related computers, accessories and software even though I don't understand how any of them work.
Original BBQL's: 2x German, 1x UK model (plus quite a bit of other old stuff)
Custom AT cased QL system with Gold Card, Qimi mouse, Hermes and MFM HDD
PC with QXLII card installed
Q68 also present

Ask me about near NOS re-felted good quality Microdrive Carts - many available.

Don't know if this one helps :

https://www.qlforum.co.uk/search.php?st ... k&start=60

The resistors required - 2 x 330R - these are the terminator resistors - these are wried across the 3.5mm socket switch so that they are in circuit when the jack plug is NOT insterted, and are disconnected (open circuit) when the jack plug is inserted.

1 x 47R resistor as a protection resistor on the Q68 header

1 x Schottky diode to prevent voltage spikes and shunt them to ground.

2 x 3.5mm socket with integrated switch - switch should be normally closed when the socket is empty and open when the plug is inserted - like a standard mono headphone socket on the old transistor radios.

Yes, I get it! When I get a moment I'll give that a go. I'll steal a socket from a spares ZX81.
