It uses the same graphics as the original, but instead of playing against the computer you play against other players, sometimes alone or in teams.

There are loads of new enhancements, such as alterations to the original map to add new cities and lords, supply caravans to get stores to your tiring troops, magical fairies in woods, bandits, dragon-riders etc.

Also, along with the original map, I also implemented Doomdark's Revenge, and then the floodgates opened and we have something like 10 or so maps, all but the original two having been designed by players themselves. All have a background story associated with them that links them to the original LOM storyline though.

The game is completely free to play, and you need no special software, other than a relatively modern browser. It will run in IE6, but I'd suggest IE8 or above or better still Firefox, as that is what we use to develop it and it renders best in that.

Just been on holiday in Mallorca, while drink the odd glass of vino blanca, I was reading the Lord of Midnight ebook by Drew Wagar, via Kindle Unlimite at:

Quite a good read.

I did some reasearch on the game on the Spectrum, which I see that all the graphics are availble and Chris Wild did a PC version, the 8086 source available for dowload.

Would 68K version be of any interest, I am not sure if Z80 or 8086 is easy to port over.

Hi,

That is what I thought about 8086 registers.

Do you think, porting the 886 code to 68K is the way to go or port the 8086 code to Superbasic and compile with Turbo?

I was doing the same think for BBC 6502 inline assembly code converting it to Superbasic procedures and functions, the resultant Superbasic would have to be compiled to show an approximate speed on a QL based running at 16 - 40 Mhz

Hi Derek,

A 68K version would be of great interest to the LOM community, I'm sure. There was once an Amiga port done by a chap called Peter Armstrong (if memory serves - he helped me out with the landscaping offsets for M/MU). But I don't think that the source code was ever available for that (I could be wrong).

I've read Drew's book - he'd been teasing us with his progress for months on Twitter and on the forums (https://forum2.midnightmu.com/). It's divided opinion a bit, let's put it that way, although overall I think most people enjoyed it.

One thing to bear in mind - the Singleton family do keep track of ports etc, and you may be safest asking Chris (who handles all things LOM for them) for a license if you do decide to do the work - I think he is happy to do so, at no cost, as long as there is no commercial gain involved. I think you just need to add a bit of text saying it was developed under license from the Singleton estate. There is a free Android port on the Play store (not Chris' remake) that was allowed on after they added that line.

Anyway, if you are interested in doing this, do register at the forum (link above) - there are loads of people who would be delighted to know about this, and several devs, including Chris himself, who can help you with graphical assets, etc. You could also have a go at playing Midnight/MU itself if you fancied - I could take you through an introductory game; there are maps available that are for beginners, before you step up to LOM, DDR, or even bigger (The Rift being an absolute monster where games can last months). I am Sparrowhawk on that forum too.

Hi,

I read some of Chris Wild's blog. I am not sure why he bothered to port LOM to the PC if there is a problem with IP.

The comments about BoB and the Spectrum Next, I fully support, the original game should not be changed.

I intended to port LOM to the Q68 and be free to download along with source code, but with possible problems with IP ownership, it is all too serious.

So I may do the wotk for my own entertainment.

I think the issues with IP are more to do with the particular porter in that case. Although I do not know the ins and outs.

There are lots of free ports that have not had any issues: Android, Psion 16, Java, Web (Midnight/MU itself), Windows. A partial list is on Chris' site: http://www.frozenempire.net/links

Didn't realise there was a LoM thread here - cunningly disguised.

I'd be interested in a 68K port.

I've read both Drew Wagar's books - enjoyed them - although they only represent one out of many ways of playing the games.

I believe he was planning on doing a third volume based on an unfinished follow-up ?
