Sinclair QL QUBIDE interface DIY kit from Tetroid getting hot and no screen

Post by thesithlord »

Hi everybody,

I bought this kit and soldered it together following the manual. But today I founded the time to fire up my QL. It booted up fine - powered it of - plugged in the interface - powered it on... only hearing some crank repeating noise from one microdrive nothing happened. After a few seconds pittily I touched one of the interface chips and got nearly burned fingers...

Powered the QL of emmidatly -removed the interface board -powered on my QL -and it booted up fine *puuuuuuhhhhh*

Only 2 chips from the interface board are getting extremely hot:
the Winbond and the Samsung one, other chips incl. voltage regulator keeping cool...

Difficult to say without any pictures, but as a first guess either the voltage regulator is bridged, providing 9V to the chips, or the chips are mounted the wrong way round?

Hi,

Can you post a photograph of each of the PCB.

There maybe shorted traces on the PCB.

When I compare this to the official photo the two Atmel chips to the left seem to be exchanged (chip 1 is near the IDE port in the official photograph).

Thx, I changed them like on the picture, but I found something more interesting:

Jumper J6-J7 allows connect +9v with +5v and use QubIDE with a Qplane. CAUTION. Don't use this feature in a standard QL or you will destroy the Qubide. Read the original Qubide documentation.

on my one the jumper was set... hopefully it survived... will test it today later... *argh* damn it...

Well, then my first guess with the bridged voltage regulator was right after all ;-) It depends on how long you tried, I guess the chips can take a few seconds of 9V. Good luck!
