A newcomer from Barcelona

Post by JupiterJones »

Hello everyone,

My name is Victor. Recently I just acquired a nice looking QL and I'm absolutely new to these computers. I've been fiddling around some time with 8 but computers (as my first computer is a still running Amstrad CPC), but I've got almost immediately interested in the QL as I saw it, but I must confess I'm a bit overwhelmed with it and the delicate microdrives... So I'm pretty sure I'll be begging for some help with it!

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of QL! Be sure to check out Dilwyn Jones' wonderful resources, both his blog and web site. They have most of the information you'll need. A very good page to start with is Back to QL. Even if you're technically not "coming back" it is still a treasure trove of info.

There are other excellent blogs and sites as well, but in my opinion Dilwyn's is the best place to start.

Greetings from (still very snowy) Finland

Thank you very much! I'll check these sites thoroughly, indeed!

I've started re-felting some cartridges with not much luck so far, and a microdrive not behaving, so I'd definitely need some good information as such. Again, thanks!

Microdrives are a marvellous, finicky beast :D

One thread with a pointer to another here... They have a certain retro-charm but personally I try to steer as far away from them as possible

Yes, indeed! I'm still sticking with tapes in my other 8 bit computers due to that retro-charm... I can't get rid of it! And I'm also obsessed making these computers be as close as possible to their state when they left the factory...

I'll have a look too to microdrive thread, as I feel I'll badly need it...

I did sell pre-cut felt pieces on ebay pretty cheaply, but after a couple of thousand I decided to take a break as it's fiddly to do. But if you want some felt pieces that seem quite reliable so-far for re-felting, let me know.

Ask me about felt pads - I can cut them to size and they have proved excellent for mdv data recovery.
