Yes but the word ingot (British) comes from the French word lingot ... and I've just tried to explain to you why the British forgot the 'l' in their word ... ;)

To be honest, the true origin is controversial... have you read the other two definitions in the page you just linked?
See also this: "Orig. discutée, les rapports du mot fr. avec l'angl. ingot [...] étant difficiles à établir": http://www.cnrtl.fr/etymologie/lingot
Also the origin of italian "lingotto" is explained as starting from Old English "in"+"goten" with the adding of "L" by French.
I'm afraid this mystery will endure...

Given we are a Germanic speaking country, I suspect the Germanic/Nordic roots listed are more likely ;-)

From memory, the French have given us:

* 1066, Battle of Hastings and William (Guilliame?) the Conqueror who built the Tower of London.
* Brie, Camonbert (spelling?), etc.
* Champagne (yuk!) But the Brits invented sparkling wine as they had the skills to create the bottles strong enough to cope with the pressure.
* LeTour de France, Yorkshirevetc (Bloody cycle races - I spit on you!)
* Asteric & Obelisk.
* Wicked Willy! (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked_Willie)

;-)

Cgeers,
Norm.
