QL Demo: Edison 2019 winner of "oldschool demo" category

Post by bwinkel67 »

Found this demo on YouTube that won last years Edison 2019, which is some sort of demo scene gathering.

Here's the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xypc1LV976s

Ran it on my unexpanded JSU QL and it ran just fine, music included, no acceleration needed. I slightly modified the boot program since I wasn't sure if the code in line 100 would ever run, plus they used "." instead of "_" in the boot file. Don't know who programmed this, call themselves Five Finger Punch.

Including a zip of the three files, just unzip and boot from mdv1_ and it will load and run. Give it a try, pretty cool graphics and the sound is pretty neat too.

Hi,

This also runs on the Q68 under SMSQ/E in DISP_MODE 1 or 512x256

The final fractal zoom sequence is tediously slow. Is it smoother/faster with Q68 instead?

Oops, sorry, I should have searched the forum first before re-posting and then just added to that thread. Just excited to see non-QL'ers using the QL to create a demo.

I love how they did some of the graphics without any acceleration.

HI,

I entered a message in thread:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2922&p=28816&hilit=dna#p28811

But here is my quoted message:
Derek_Stewart wrote:Hi,

Works great on the Q68, in DISP_MODE 1 (512x256 Mode 4/8) or as some call classic QL mode.

It runs a lot smoother than the You Video.

I might have a look at disassembling the binary file.

*** Update

Tried it in Q-emulator, would run in Minerva, but run OK in JS Rom. But not as smooth as the Q68.

The Q68 had some screen corruption at the end of the fractal sequence, but ran fine.

So it has some minor corruption, but runs smoothly. Thanks!

Interview with the founder of Five Finger Punch. Looks like it was created by two brothers who used to do demo's in the 80's to 90's and then quit and got back into it in 2014 (sounds like some of us with regard to retro computing :-/). One of the brothers works at Resolution Games https://www.resolutiongames.com so he knows what he's doing.

Link to interview in 2019. He alludes to the QL demo in the first question
