I do create stuff for the Raspberry Pi also :)

Many of the systems (ZXpand and DivIDE Plus for example) support updating the firmware if it is stored in a specific place on the SD cards, but I agree, I don't think it needs to be in the boot sector

That's a repackaged Amstrad PC, which is an IBM compatible! But I know that you know that I know that you know that!
And of course, every IBM compatible of that era (and later of course) has to boot off a bootable drive (unless it's dropping straight into a IBM/M$ BASIC ROM)...
