I got hold of a QL PSU, which puzzles me.
- it looks like a QL PSU, black and with the Sinclair sign. On the bottom it reads: 9V DC at 1.8A / 15.6V AC at 0.2V. So far, so normal
- it is about 1/3 more in length than the standard QL PSU
- it has an integrated ON/OFF switch on the transformer
- someone seems to have a grey Spectrum-like plug fitted (to get the 9V and to operate a Spectrum on a QL PSU?!?)
- It also reads on the bottom "Made in Switzerland"
Have you ever seen a bigger QL PSU, that was made in Switzerland? Why did they change the dimensions?
Unknown QL PSU
Re: Unknown QL PSU
I have one. It is the same. (But it has no Spectrum plug of course.)
My conclusion also was, that it is specially intended for Swiss.
Probably, they needed a switch on the primary transformer coil (that's, why I have placed a switch on the inlet cable of my other Sinclair power supplies).

Re: Unknown QL PSU
Thank you Dex! Good to know. I wonder where to get the original trapezoid plug, so this PSU can be used on a QL again?
Edit: Strange, I just opened up the PSU. Looks like the additional space was used for the switch. I´m not an electronics guy, but there´s only a two wire cable going to the PSU board. For 9V DC and 15.6V AC this is not enough, I reckon. What cable does the original QL PSU use and where are the wires connected?

Re: Unknown QL PSU
I just use this part of my web site to upload pictures for forum discussions.
Is this Swiss PSU being worth to be revived and can it be done? The switch on the PSU is tempting, isn´t it?

Re: Unknown QL PSU
The output of the transformer is 15.6v, the board rectifies and smooths that to 9v DC - then both are passed through to the computer.
Re: Unknown QL PSU
So it´s just a question of getting the right plug? Are they available anywhere?
Edit: Urs Koenig from Switzerland just comfirmed to me, that these PSUs were made for the QL by the order of Sinclair. He owns two of them, although they never seem to have shipped with boxed QLs. Urs reckons that Sinclair wanted to be 100% compliant with the VDE standard, so they added a real ON/OFF switch for continental countries, where there´s no switch on the power socket.

He he, actually I find the Search function of QL Forum (just under the logo on the logo at the top) S..O.. useful when I know something 's been discussed and I can't for the life of me remember where or when on the Forumschombi wrote:Jungsi made me aware that all information needed is in there:

(in other words, with a memory like mine good job there's search functions available)
