There's a website that has tinkered with the CM11A that stats 4800 baud. Also, I have a Hermes installed so that baud rate shouldn't be a problem if it's 9600.
Can the 8049 handle 4800 by itself, esp if there isn't much traffic at that speed since I doubt it's a long stream of bits to send a control signal and get verification.

If you have Hermes you can use P20, P23 and P26 as inputs and/or outputs (see Hermes manual).
(IMHO you'd need to buffer them for output, pins are quasi-bidirectional: low is 300ohm to 0V, weak high is 50Kohm to +5V, strong high is 5Kohm to +5V for 272nS when set)
