Tonights Job - Super Hermes Installation

Post by vanpeebles »

My Super Hermes came through today from RWAP so I'll be able to use a proper keyboard and a serial mouse in the future. Just done the initial fitting so far. I have a spare case top so I'll get the dremel on that when I have time to fit the sockets.

The little wire hook is an odd thing. Most awkward parts of these jobs is find routes for the cables. Fires back up fine, so I can relax now with a beer!

Don't make too good a job of installing the ports in a QL lid, or you may find I send you my QL and a SuperHERMES!

Quick question, if I use an external keyboard with the super hermes, can I remove the original one?

Yes, of course - the main issue you have is that SuperHermes needs to load in its drivers from disk before the keyboard will be fully operational (it has a small buffer to hold the initial F1/F2 key press, but after that, without the driver you are stuck!)

That was the beauty of the RomDiSQ as you would not forget to have it in the QL!
I think you can also use the small 128 chaaracter RAM boot on Minerva MKII to do this ...

Would it autoboot the driver from a floppy?

Yes of course, if you put the necessary lines in a boot file (or use the supplied SuperHermes disk), but it is easy to forget to put the disk in the drive every time you reset the QL !

I have a brand new SuperHermes gathering dust at the moment waiting to be installed, how long did it take you to complete from start to finish VP?

Not too long really, half an hour. The main time is routing all the cables nicely, still not got round to cutting the case yet for the sockets but I'm working on a super special case top for this one! 8-)
