Often what the printer does, is that it knows how much ink is used in every 'squirt', and counts how many 'squirts' its done. To calculate how much ink is left in the cartridge.

To be sure that the printer will not actually run out of ink before its done it's maximum number of squirts, they put a bit extra ink in the cartridge. Also, If you happen to have any blocked nozzles while printing, then the printer will think its used more ink than it actually has.

They also work on the assumption you’ll power cycle it after every page, which means a power-up cleaning/priming cycle. The ink volume can handle that. You’re really not buying a volume of ink, but a page count. You can use an arduino to reset the page/ink count and change the serial number.

I know it doesn’t help, but try a leaking laser toner cartridge. Bugger me that stuff gets everywhere and doesn’t clean off.

And be careful about using a vacuum cleaner with it. The toner can get through the filters and gum up the motor. We used to have special vacuum cleaners at work for toner.

with laser printer toner - always wash hands with cold water - warm / hot water can actually fuse the ink!

It was a very rough week, but we did better than most around us. I have some losses due to the freeze. If anything, the news seems to be sugar coating how bad it was which is a nice change.
