There's a pre-production model on eBay

What does pre-production mean exactly in this case? Small batch run ?

Interesting that it was used at the MOD, I had no idea UK gov used Sinclair machines for anything (other than in education)

No picture of PCB so could be the standard mods added to lots of early issues!

I saw that.

It's utter nonsense of course. It's a pretty low serial no. (900 odd higher than the earliest known) but is an absolutely normal QL from what I can tell, probably an issue 5. Even if it did have very early ROMs and a dongle when new, it's probably been upgraded since. And I believe very very early ones didn't have the cooling slots on the back at the top opposite the drives... this one does.

It is therefore not saved in my watch list!

Ask me about felt pads - I can cut them to size and they have proved excellent for mdv data recovery.

Definitely looks like a seller trying to get the maximum amount of money from an unsuspecting naive buyer.
And “M.O.D” may or may not stand for what you think it does.

And I don’t think Sinclair would have produced many hundreds of so called “pre-production” machines, but the serial number is D05-001975...

Hello Sparrowhawk,

I agree with Chr$ and 1024MAK.

D05-001976 is a "D05" QL version. Before it was manufactured, there were 89 QLs with serial numbers "D02-0010xx", approx. 50 "D03" QLs with serial numbers "D03-010xx" to "D03-011xx", between 250 and 520 "D04" QLs, and at least 316 "D05" QLs up from D05-001659.

If there has ever been a "pre-production model", maybe referenced as "D01", the machines were very unlikely provided with a serial number.

Maybe M.O.D. stands for "my overpriced deals".

George
