I know! It seemed to fluctuate between 5 - 8.4v, so lucky I nipped that in the bud. In the end RAM IC8 was actually fine and it was its neighbour IC16 that was spoiling things - my chip tester didn't even recognise it as a 64Kx8 chip. All fine now. I quite enjoyed that repair.
