Sharing programs between QPC2 and Q-emuLator

Post by RWAP »

It is interesting talking to people who have come back to the QL scene, and who are experiencing the QL emulators for the first time (maybe thanks to the DVD circulated with the last issue of QL Today).

One issue which seems to perplex them is how to access the same files on Q-emuLator and QPC2.

The first thing to remember is that you cannot run both emulators at the same time and expect them to access the same file / device....

There are various methods for this:

a) Use a QL formatted floppy disk in the PC's disk drive. On Q-emuLator, you attach a QL floppy disk to one of the 'microdrive' slots and it is easy. On QPC2 you need to click on devices on the startup screen and ensure that the floppy disk drive A:/ is attached as flp1_ (or flp2_ if you prefer).

b) Use a ZIP file downloaded from the internet. On Q-emuLator you can attach this zip file to one of the slots as a READ ONLY file. On QPC2, you will need to store the ZIP file in a folder which you can easily access (go to the Devices option on startup and point DOS1_ to that foler). You can then use COPY DOS1_test_zip TO ram1_test_zip from within QPC2 and then you need to use an unzip program to extract the files.

c) Use a QXL.win file. QXL.win is a pseudo QL hard disk - in effect it is a large single PC file which the QL emulators see as a hard disk (or a large floppy disk if you like). Q-emuLator allows you to attach a qxl.win file to a slot for access, whilst under QPC2, you will need to click on devices on the startup menu and point WIN1_ to it.

(a) and (c) both allow you to copy files to or from the media from within either emulator, although remember that you can easily over-write existing files with the same name, so use unique names for your files.

Remember that whilst FLP_USE mdv will work on software running on QPC2 (and may be required!) - on Q-emuLator, this command is not recognised, and not actually required, as DIR flp1_, DIR win1_ , DIR mdv1_ will all produce a directory of whatever is attached to slot 1
