Re: CPU 68080

To achieve a high resolution with the Q68 I have to use mode 3, set to black & white because I think this looks better than when set to 4 colours. I find the speed of the Q68 set to mode 3 is adequate for the kind of applications that I write. The lack of speed in 1024x768 highcolor was address...

Re: zx8301 replacement

Agree 8301 replacements are becoming increasingly rare, and in the long run, it could make sense to think about replacements. The 8301 is, however, much less well (rather not at all) documented as the Spectrum chips. Documentation is only an issue, if the exact timings have to be replicated. The qu...

Re: CPU 68080

I would not agree, since SMSQ/E with it's deeply 68K dependent/optimized assembler-only code is practically impossible to port to a different CPU architecture (unlike AmigaOS).
While designing QL hardware > 68030 is possible and has been done before.

Re: CPU 68080

Which was a question I asked Miracle Systems when the Gold Card appeared, can the 68008 be used as a co-processor, which Stuart say NO. Which was the same for the Super Gold Card. Should I release a CPU upgrade for the QL someday, it would likely use the 68008 as coprocessor, rather than disabling ...

Re: CPU 68080

They did at one point announce a "free" license to use just the CPU section with a lower clock speed as a CPU replacement. No idea if anyone has ever taken up this offer or if it still exists. Long while ago I looked into the offer and had some initial discussions with them. In this case ...

Re: Q68 QoE Ethernet Driver

If you plan to support the 68008, a 2 kHz interrupt is probably not a good idea as it causes significant overhead for such a slow CPU. The only thing that needs better than 20 ms granularity is PING. There are other places in the current driver code, but in principle 500µs are not needed to get the ...

Re: Q68 QoE Ethernet Driver

1. I don't know how well a 7.5MHz 68008 can keep up with reading data packets from the CP2200 controller chip. I'd expect throughput only moderately higher than QL network. But it would provide the ethernet connectivity. [EDIT] Also I don't know if the driver will work in QDOS/Minerva. This can be ...

Re: Ethernet for the QL

I was trying to put them on a short cable so the socket could be located somewhere with more room (can't close the case) but the signal is destroyed. I was not aware you were using a cable. That is of course problematic. The datasheet also says the magnetics need to be within 3-4cm of the IC. From ...

No they are not. In 512x256 QL MODE 4, I double horizontally and triple vertically for VESA standard 1024x768 on 4:3 monitor.
That roughly provides the QL aspect ratio seen on CRT historically.

Re: Ethernet for the QL

Suitable separate magnetics certainly exist. But I never selected any, since I prefer them integrated. Not sure what you mean by "up to about 40mm away and then it all goes to hell". The signals are differential, so if you have a groundplane and keep them in pairs, I don't see why the CP22...
