Re: Just confirming SER1 to PC COM adapter

Hi Chris, Much appreciated Jan. It's all Chinese to me but I think I have followed your instructions. I now have the following: PC pins 1 (DCD) and 6 (DSR) and QL Printer plug pin 9 are connected to the +12v from the other PC COM port (in my PC manual it states that only COM 2,3,4 are powered and at...

Re: Just confirming SER1 to PC COM adapter

Hello Jan, I had a look inside the plug of the QL printer and only pins 1 - 5 and pin 9 are connected. I checked the voltages on those pins and got the following: 1 - 0v (def ground) 2 - nothing much detected 3 - minus 11v 4 - nothing much detected 5 - minus 11v 9 - plus 12v So does that mean that ...

Re: Help with Composite out

I haven't used my BBQLs much with composite colour, but I remember the picture quality was quite poor. Lots of dot crawl and definitely not suitable for a 80x25 screen. On the other hand, the monochrome picture is rock steady. I'm still using my green monochrome Philips monitor of almost 35 years wi...

Re: Help with Composite out

NTSC and PAL are two methods of encoding a colour signal onto a composite monochrome signal (PAL being an improved, but not compatible version of NTSC). The QL can produce one or the other, but not both at the same time. It sound like your monitor/TV may support both NTSC and PAL (check it's specif...

Re: Reverse Engineering

I agree - rework or making a copy using the source to make another comercial product would infringe the legality. But we see a lot of books on disassembly of the spectrum roms for instance - I presume these must have been given legal authority to publish? The Spectrum never came with a licence cont...

Re: Just confirming SER1 to PC COM adapter

I agree, that table makes no sense. Since I have a US QL I just measured and pin 9 on the DB9 RST232 is giving out a 12 volt signal (grounded to pin 1). So it seems this one by Urs is more reliable: This is interesting. If this diagram is correct, this would mean German QLs have SER1 and SER2 rever...

Re: Just confirming SER1 to PC COM adapter

Ok, just to properly verify the correct method of making an adapter cable for a PC COM port to German QL Spec SER1, because there is conflicting info out there, I don't know much about these things, need to get my head round it and I want to be sure (basically, it's so that I can print to a QL prin...

Re: QL-VGA

On my D15 QLs, the POKE has no effect. But your 8301 is a CLA2345, this is different from mine (CLA2310, date code 8453). (I have two issue 5 QLs and two issue 6, all are plain UK models but some have a 220V power supply rather than 240V). Interesting. I only have German QLs, which automatically se...
