Re: Neither FORTH nor QL

The Preface of the book mentioned in this topic is an interesting read, and as Norm writes, it can be bought cheaply from Amazon. The authors state that Oberon is the result of trying to build a system from scratch and making it as simple as possible, but not simpler (attributed to Einstein,no less)...

Re: Animation in SMSQE

It will take me a while to digest the recent posts from BSJR Martin_Head, pjw, derek, stevepoole and TMD2003, for I am still tinkering with dilwyn's code. In particular dilwyn's "walking figure" code would be more realistic if the characters were of an actual figure. I have searched on his...

Re: Animation in SMSQE

Thank you, stevepoole. Your code works well and reveals that my ancient PC is 5 times slower than yours.

Re: Animation in SMSQE

I have played around with dilwyns sample code and describe the effect on a 1024x768 QPC2 ancient laptop setup as follows:- (I am compiling his code with liberator) No matter what I try, if write to a window more than 50 times a second multitasking is seriously degraded. At a certain speed the system...

Re: Animation in SMSQE

I wish to thank dilwyn et al. for the posts on this topic and the "Dynamic Sprites" topic. There is much to digest,so I am going to create a small manual consisting of edited extracts of these posts and then print them out and try and understand what is possible. I will document my attempt...

Animation in SMSQE

I have been trying to write some "crap" games for the 2021 competition using Liberated SBASIC in SMSQE and have found animation rather difficult ,so when I noticed the Dynamic Sprite topic I posted a some questions relating to their use in games programming. My questions were quickly answe...

Re: Dynamic Sprites

I have played around with dilwyn's delaying code and it worked once I had changed line 6 to IF counter < speed but like all my animation experiments I get odd results on SMSQE at high resolutions. I appreciate that QDOS was not designed to support real-time animation but I enjoy trying. The subject ...

Re: Dynamic Sprites

Thank you for your short, simple and informative answer. I have been trying to write some "crap" games for the 2021 competition, mostly to learn how to program in SBASIC. My best, so far, is a bat and ball game in which the animation consists of repeatedly writing characters to the screen....

Re: Dynamic Sprites

I can't really follow this topic but my guess is that sprites, dynamic and static, would be useful for writing games. Dynamic, cursor and pointer sprites are mentioned but it is not clear if they are the same thing by different names. I have some questions as follows:- What is a sprite? Can any spri...

Re: Thing Removal

I cannot find a copy of the file QDASM_REXT on Dilwyn Jones's website. Is anyone able to post a copy of this file and perhaps
some guidance on its use?
