Well sick of the stupid OS.

Was hoping the 2010's would bring us new OS ideas, nope, same old unstable crap :-(

Maybe the 2020's?

Maybe XorA's Chromebook/Linux systems will collide with my PC as they are all thrown out of their respective windows?

Try Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 then, if you want real hassle!
Seriously though, the above are best avoided, especially the latter 2.

What's bugging you about Linux? I might be able to help.

I run my business exclusively on Linux and have done since 2003, with no problems. On top of that I do all my QL stuff on it, the online superBasic manual was done mostly on it, but a bit of Windows 7 thrown in at work too. It works. It runs most of the Internet. And most of the top performing super computers too. Not to mention the Raspberry Pi.

Cheers,
Norm.

my day job is Linux kernel developer.

But crap like the gfx drivers hard locking my machine at random are incredibly hard to even report to a bug tracker as I get zero output at all.

If your machine hard locks, does it still answer ping requests?
Could you use rlogin or such tools to get some diagnosis? Or via a serial line? I know it's hard to do anything without screen but I don't remember having my linux machine totally locked out.
I admit I know little about linux and after half a year of trying hard to avoid any windows stuff on my linux machine without success I was able to get my hands on a macbook pro (2013 it's all a question of money  ) and am back to OSX without any need for win stuff anymore :)
I had about 90% of my things done in linux at the end.

No Hard Lock, means it is totally dead and unresponsive, it didn't even get time to write a crashlog to disk.

Only the 10s salute on the power key does anything :-)

And its only going to get worse, as I work in the industry i see everyone dumping linux guys (coz linux is free init) to put their investment in windows.

Now that's hard core! You have my sincere admiration. I tried to write a QL floppy file system for VFS some years back. I failed miserably! I started writing it up at http://qdosmsq.dunbar-it.co.uk/doku.php ... x:fs:start so if you read it, don't laugh too loud!

Good luck with gfx. Whatever that is.

Cheers,
Norm.

Not as hardcore as it sounds, lots of swearing at lack of docs, lots of swearing under breath at developers slating your code when you remember they wrote the code you copied the style from.

Then LOTS and LOTS of discussions on the colours of a bikeshed :-(

But actually the kernel is just a large badly documented program with terrible API consistency.

But looking at your page I think you found that :-D

I never thought of doing a QDOS filesystem, there is an Amiga one and Acorn ones, hmmmmmm!!!

If I remember correctly, I think I suffered from a change in calling conventions at some kernel upgrade. I might go "fuse" at some point, at least that's stable.

Cheers,
Norm.
