Roguelike games on the QL?

Post by vanpeebles »

Did the QL ever have any ports of roguelike games such as nethack, angband or omega? The machine has loads of great text adventures but short on RPG's. These games would be perfect for the QL.

I was never aware of any but wouldn't that be a great project for a group of like minded QLers?

Not sure what the difference is here really - what about Dragonhold and Heart of Gern?

I haven't seen those games what do they look like? Compared to a text adventure, roguelike games have a top down map made of text characters and you move round a town or dungeon, levelling up your stats, collecting treasure, weapons etc and fighting monsters.

Even though the graphics are made up of text the actual game can be quite deep with towns, vast areas to explore, people to find, quests, magic, etc etc

This is the starting town on Angband:

If I could get a fully working copy, I would remember what they are like!!

Actually I have a working copy of Dragonhold on microdrive, with a disk backup which still needs the master cartridge from memory.

For some reason, I can't get it to work on q-emulator!

Actually Rogue (which is basically a clone of nethack) for the QL does exist (or used to) - Have a look on Thierry Godefroy's site, there's mentioning of Rogue.lzh (unfortunately, the link http://morloch.hd.free.fr/smsq/Area14/Rogue.lzh is dead. If you ask Thierry nicely, he would probably repair it).

Added after a bit of googling around: There seems to be a disk image of rogue for the QL on a spanish server:

No idea how good that is, however.

Cheers,

What a good find, will it run on a standard QL with extra ram? :)

Not sure if it's the same game, there's a zip file Rogue game on the games page on my website, if you have difficulty with the above site. http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/games/rogue.zip

It looks pretty similar!
I managed to get it running with some tinkering and with the help of vanpeebles! :ugeek:

After unzipping the rogue zip file, you need to edit rogue_boot and change two lines to read as follows;
190 LRESPR env_bin
220 setenv 'LOGIN=QLuser'

After those lines had been changed the game would run!
I ran the game by typing;
TK2_EXT
lrun flp1_rogue_boot

Hope this helps! :D
