I have been speaking with Ulrich Rosowski this evening - he designed some of the hardware for ABC Elektronik.

He has come back to me with a list of his projects:

1. An epromboard with 6 sockets, where you can place the different extensions and selected one at a time with a switch.
2. The keyboard from ABC. (Jochen Merz wrote the software)
3. A robot arm control interface
4. An I/O interface 8Bit in, 8Bit out, 8Bit adress
5. The Megaram from ABC
6. A Harddisk Interace, ( Software wrote an other german guy, i don't remember the name)
7. Of course the U+5 Bus Interface

He has said that he has some documentation and even parts, so will have a look what he has.

Hopefully, we might get some circuit diagrams etc - you never know...

More things to add to the QL Wiki and preservation project - wonder if Urs has any of these?

Hi,

I remember in 1992, I tried to buy a MegaRam from ABC Elektonik, but they decided to keep the money, which was nearly 200 pounds. But I was advised to write to the German County Court, who obtained a refund.

I have the ABC QSound board, which seems to still work, pity that they were not so forthcomming with the MegaRam.

Derek

Ah...it was new to me, that the MegaRAM never appeared. Does anybody know the reason, why?

I also remember (from former days), that Uli had designed an new kind of QL motherboard. A lot smaller as far as I remember.

I just recently found a "review" of MegaRAM in an old QL World - It ended up in some desaster for the product because the reviewer couldn't get it to work. (Apparently, it didn't fit into his QL mechanically)

He then apparently brought it over to his specialist of choice (Miracle Systems, if I recall right - I'd guess this could well be considered a questionable move by a reviewer), who told him they couldn't make it work as well.

After that, I couldn't find any mention of MegaRAM in QL World any more.

Regards,
Tobias

Yes, but that was known (here in Germany) as Uli has stated this in the first place, when Andreas Budde showed a prototype for the first time.

In most QLs the CPU and ZX8301 socket are of different heights and VERY poor. Only the Samsung QLs seem to have better quality sockets that are the same height.

I think it was rather the crystal that got in the way - on some QLs it was mounted upright with no way to bend it and not break it. And in upright position it touches any PCB that goes over it - with its metallic surface

The adverts I've seen say "up to 2Megs (or was it 3?) will fit in the original case, more needs replacement case".

The megaram IIRC was a 2M RAM board that replaced the original DIL 68008 CPU with a PLCC 68008FN that has a 4M address range.
