Note to self...

Post by Whopper »

Do NOT create disk partitions of 2GB and then format them.

Take ages and ages and ages... well you get the picture.

Still waiting,

They take a lot of memory though.

I tried to attach a 2GB partition to WIN1_ and a 1776MB partition to WIN2_ and got an out of memory error.

I currently only have one 4GB DoM, waiting on a batch of CF IDE adaptors, so I was going to re initialise and repartition the DoM into 8 512MG partitions. That may give me a bit more flexibility and lower the RAM usage.

How much memory does a 2GB partition need?

From the QubIDE manual -

Here is a little summary of different FAT size requirements regarding block sizes used :
 8 KBytes per 1 MBytes of storage with 1 Sec/Blk
 4 KBytes per 1 MBytes of storage with 2 Sec/Blk
 2 KBytes per 1 MBytes of storage with 4 Sec/Blk
 1 KBytes per 1 MBytes of storage with 8 Sec/Blk
 1 KBytes per 2 MBytes of storage with 16 Sec/Blk
 1 KBytes per 4 MBytes of storage with 32 Sec/Blk
 1 KBytes per 8 MBytes of storage with 64 Sec/Blk
A partition of 2 GBytes size with 64 Sectors/Block may be made with a 256 Kbytes FAT size only, but
the smallest file with 1 Byte per example will take a whole block of 64 sectors (32768 Bytes) of
storage

I used a 64 sector block size to get the smallest FAT.

So, I really am going to reinitialise my DoM. There would be far too much wasted space in a 32KB block size.

I didn't see you were doing this on a QL - That's really a waste of memory there.

128 to 256 MB sound a bit more reasonable.

I have the standard 128KB plus the 512 from the QubIDE, so 640KB. believe me it doesn't last long. :(

Huh.... 640K isn't enough? Should be enough for anybody.

We'll have to do something bigger....

Yeah, 640KB is too small.

I'll download some from the internet, :D
