ICE and Super GoldCard

Post by lowrybt »

Does the super goldcard inhibit the use of the QL ROM port and/or the use of the ICE ROM? Relatedly, if they are compatible, does ICE recognize level 2 directories since the Goldcard has ToolKit II?

Thanks, TB

Surprised no one answered this...

No they do not inhibit use, both the Gold card and Super Gold card recognise the ROM port. The only penalty is the access time (read/write) is slowed down to old QL bus speed. Best if you can copy EPROM and use it from faster RAM.

Additionally, the top of OS ROM $BF80-$BFFF (128 bytes) is also treated simiarly. This allows Minerva Mark 2 I2C hardware to work (and, AFAIK, other hardware - IIRC one of the keyboard interfaces). Also the bottom eigth locations $0000-$0007 reads are passed through by GC/SGC (but not a true read of the ROM port) to allow Miracle hard drive hardware to detect reset. You can prove this yourself by putting a logic probe on ROM port ROMOEH.

Whether ICE recognises level 2 is down to the ICE software. It is the device driver which defines whether it is level 2 . Latest versions of TK2 just provide keywords which will recognise if a driver is level 2 (ie. directories/folders).
