Hi Peter,
i am still surprised that you need addtional hardware to use a virtual floppy. Just buy a GOTEK Floppy emulator, jumper it as drive A and connect to your floppy controller. Shown on the 30th Ql user meeting by me.
You have than 100 disks to fill with data. Only buy the version which has this 2 Digits (99 drives), the versions with 999 floppies doesn't allow formating the disks with the help of the QL.
Look carefully for your needs: a 720k or the 1.44mb Version. Both working fine, but have differnent firmware.

Hi,

The Gotek drives are availble for £12.50 ish... on eBay.

The drives can be Flashed for Amiga and HXC emulation, which is extra.

Did you alter the driver code on the Gotek or using it straight out of the box.

I have a Gotek waiting to be installed in a QL or Q60

I still have a couple of the original HxC Floppy disk emulators - http://www.sellmyretro.com/offer/detail ... es%29-2227

Although you could also consider a Flopper - http://www.sellmyretro.com/offer/detail ... ator-10973

I provided a guide to setting up and using the HxC which is on Dilwyn's website - http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/docs/manuals/Si ... rticle.pdf

Please can you let me know where you found the two digit (99) drives on EBay for £12.50?

I had a look and found these three. I am not sure what one to get though:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-5-1-44MB-US ... Sw14xWJLlJ
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-5-1-44MB-US ... SwR0JUSjVJ
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/720K-Floppy-3 ... SwyvBV9m0X

Does it have to be the 720k or 1.44MB model?

There is also a full list of all Gotek models at:
http://www.soonwell.com/ebay_file/pro_p ... ulator.pdf

I'd also be interested to know what it needs to be flashed for (I am guessing HxC) and how to do this (as none of those drives seem to come pre-flashed).

Hi,

I bought a Gotek a while ago, which would account for the price difference.

I have 2 x Black Goteks... one flashed to work with an Amiga and the other is a standard drive.

To Flash the Gotek to use HxC emulation, look at this web page:

http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emu ... l#download

The Gotek emualtion is near bottom:

USB Stick STM32 HxC Floppy Emulator (beta):
The following elements allow you to program the low cost Gotek USB Floppy Emulator with the HxC bootloader & Firmwares. Contact Jean-François DEL NERO at (http://hxc2001.free.fr/imiel.htm) to get an account on the update server.
But on saying this, the native Gotek will work with the QL disk images, I have this on the list of job to do.

I have had a look at the 2 x Gotek drives 3 digit display, I think they are 720K Models. One is flashed to work with Amiga Disks and the other is a standard Gotek drive.

But I think the model selection will be based on your disk interface.

The only QL Disk Interface that can handle 1.44Mb HD Disks is a Super Gold Card or Gold Card. Interfaces like Trump Card, SuperQboard etc... have 720Kb DD Disk handling only.

The 720K Gotek can be connected to either a Gold Card, Trump Card or other older disk interfaces, but the 1.4Mb GOtek can only be connected to the Gold Card or Super Gold Card.

Extra hardware is needed for the flashing to HxC, but it works without it.

I will get the Gotek running over the weekend and report back.

Thank you for your reply Derek and your help. I would need a 720kb Gotek 2 Digit Drive then. The only 720kb Gotek drive I have found seems to be a 3 digit 999 disk model which has been stated will not work.

I am just wondering if perhaps someone could please provide a link to a 720kb Gotek drive for sale that will work for this. Or if not link the specific model number of Gotek drive I would need to buy. As I mentioned before http://www.soonwell.com/ebay_file/pro_p ... ulator.pdf seems to contain a list of all models and specs, but for things like sewing machines and organs and not QL's and Miggys.

Alternatively where it has been suggested using a Flopper, would the flopper work with 720kb disks and a Trump card? At the moment it seems like the Flopper might be the easiest\safest way to go, due to the sheer number of different model\variations of Gotek and not knowing exactly what one will work (or if it is still available to buy).
