Re: Speech Synthesis

Another question, your BASECODE needs to run in ROM for timing reasons. There's a utility for a Spectrum emulator that also uses the QL network ports. It seems to only run with expanded memory but is RAM based. Any idea why their timings work in RAM? They probably do a speed measurement on startup....

Re: ST Basic - inspired by QDOS?

IMO none were needed. For me TAlent's Assembler Workbench was simply magical. I never really looked back after that. Most of my projects were assembler-based too (actually my first 68K project was a monitor/disassembler!). But there are lots of cases where BASIC would be a better choice for rapid d...

Re: ST Basic - inspired by QDOS?

A lot has been written about the ZX Spectrum ROM and the stories behind it - the most funny thing being that Sinclair actually never owned the rights because he 'forgot' to officially buy them. Amstrad had to buy it separately from the creators at Nine Tiles. From my point of view, ZX BASIC has evol...

Re: Speech Synthesis

My question was actually the opposite: "Can a BBQL (with QDOS) still run the software even with the updates you put in for SMSQ/E" is what I was asking. So I was concerned it may not run with QDOS with the SMSQ/E changes, not that I wanted to run SMSQ/E on the BBQL. Sounds like that's the...

Re: Speech Synthesis

The complete source and circuit diagram are here on GitHub: https://github.com/janbredenbeek/QL-Basicode So reading this diagram, you need to add a 4.5 volt power source to the circuit to get it to work I'm guessing? Also, is that a 2.5K preset resistor I assume...so you have to do a little adjustm...

Re: Speech Synthesis

Thank you Dilwyn! Btw, here is what digitized speech sounds like on a ZX81...maybe someday we can have that on the QL too... I remember having written a small sound sampling routine for the Spectrum using the cassette port. It samples just 1 bit at a time so the sound will be very distorted but sti...

Re: Speech Synthesis

Should your software be put on Dilwyn's page so it's more visible to us ordinary folks? :D That's up to Dilwyn, but If he does I would appreciate a link to my GitHub page too since that contains the source files and documentation. Thank you Jan. I've put it on the Misc Software page on my site, und...

Re: Speech Synthesis

Thank you Jan, this is amazing. I will take a look at it and see if I can figure out how the digitizer on the ZX81 worked. Maybe we can get some audio out of the network ports as a sort of pseudo sound card. I've read up on the Kansas City standard (4 pulses for zero and 8 pulses for one) is pretty...

Re: Speech Synthesis

One of the Ergon Spectrum emulators had a utility package which let you read Spectrum cassettes via the network ports. Never tried it. In the ZM/Accessories pack on http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/spectrum/index.html There was also an early bit of software which let you output files in this way via the net...

Re: Gold Card initial release date

I remember having bought my Gold Card in October 1991 at the Eindhoven show. It was a trade-in of my Trump Card (still have the invoice somewhere).

This was already a V2 with red PCB.
