Re: 68060 based QL system?

You don't seem to understand that in a computer system (and QDOS/SMS is no different in this respect), the CPU is best used doing cleverer things than just moving bytes between an I/F and memory... Trivial to understand, I had already confirmed that after your first mention, just adding that backgr...

Re: 68060 based QL system?

Either way, it is the peripheral bus (ISA), not the CPU, which slows down CDROM data transfer on the Q60. DMA would not speed up the transfer. Oh yes it would !!!! No. For an ISA bus design with a CPU as fast as 68060, throughput is just a matter of generating optimal repetitive ISA bus cycles to b...

Re: What does...make QL...the QL?

For me, in addition to the already mentioned points: - A 32 Bit internal structure, allowing hardware upgrades competitive to PC until the Pentium era. (And potentially beyond that, if not for questionable Motorola decisions.) - The beauty of the 68K architecture and assembly language Non-Sinclair f...

Re: 68060 based QL system?

Believe me (as the implementer of the ATAPI/CD-ROM driver for the Q60), data transfer via the CPU *is* the bottleneck There were several ways to access CDROM by Duncan, Wolfgang and Thierry, so I don't know who you are, and what you mean in particular. Maybe tell us? Either way, it is the periphera...

Re: 68060 based QL system?

My worry is that the last monitor I got that can still display the Q60 screen is over 15 years old and won't last forever (I already repaired it twice)... As mentioned earlier, I'm currently in the test phase of a stopgap solution. Less than ideal, because it leave one third of the screen black. Ho...

Re: 68060 based QL system?

What about potential instruction time improvements that could be had with FPGA design For many register-to-register instructions, the Q68 takes just one cycle already, if run from internal RAM. The much larger factor is SDRAM access, i.e. lack of cache. Further improvements could come from newer, h...

Re: 68060 based QL system?

*strokes RiscPC with StrongARM, remembers working on it.* Aha! That explains everything for me. ;) Thanks for explaining what an RTOS is. :D If SMSQ/E was running on a 2GHz processor, with time slices 1/1,000,000th of a second instead of 1/50th of a second, and only very slightly revised job contro...

Re: 68060 based QL system?

If it were undertaken it would be a labor of love for many people over many years. Love for ARM? I would understand that on an Archimedes forum, but not here. Love is about beauty, most of us love the beauty of the 68K architecture and assembler language. It would be a prime RTOS. SMSQ/E is by no m...

Re: 68060 based QL system?

Few things are more unrealistic than porting SMSQ/E to the ARM architecture. So I never even start thinking of it. Good thing AmigaOS guys are more positive :-D (although they do have advantage of bigger usebase) I don't think it has anything to do with "positive", but - Amiga PowerPC por...

Re: New QL-SD driver

[*]WIN2 defaults to QXL.WIN in slot 2, WIN3 defaults to QXL.WIN in slot 3 (if anybody ever had a slot 3 in the history of QL-SD ;) ). Except me and probably Peter, of course The extra connector was meant to be reserved for other potential hardware add-on, not as SD card slot, so I never used it thi...
